Cyclin dependent kinases or CDKS:
- Enzymes that lead the cell through the phases of the cell cycle
- CDKs phosphorylate are crucial proteins involved in cell division
- Dependent upon another group of proteins, the cyclins
INK4 CDK inhibitors:
- Block the effects of CDK 4 and 6
When cyclin expression goes up and CDK inhibitor expression goes down:
- Cell cycle progression occurs
Cyclin Dependent kinases regulate cell cycle progression by:
- Phosphorylation of the tumor suppressor gene Rb
- This leads to the release of the E2F transcription factor which then mediates transcription of genes responsible for cell cycle progression
